Latronico

Latronico is a place that reveals itself slowly, like the most genuine stories. It is a mountain village of about 3,800 inhabitants, embraced by the forests of the Pollino National Park, where the air carries the scent of wood and the silence is shaped by the sound of the wind. Here, at 888 meters above sea level, the view stretches from the mountain peaks to the valleys stretching towards the horizon.

The town preserves the peaceful rhythm of an ancient life: the bakery that bakes bread at dawn, the elderly sitting on benches greeting passersby, the small shops known by name. Yet Latronico is a lively and welcoming place; while maintaining the scale and pace of a mountain village, it offers small grocery stores, a post office, pharmacies, a cinema, and several bars and cafés where one can enjoy convivial moments. Walking through its stone-paved streets, you can breathe in an authentic atmosphere made of simplicity, human connections, and the appreciation of shared time.

Those who come here don’t just find a place to live, but a community that welcomes them.

Latronico is located in a privileged position, about an hour away from both of Basilicata’s coastlines: the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the beautiful Maratea coast, and the Ionian Sea, home to the renowned resorts of Metaponto and Policoro. Latronico is well connected to Potenza, the regional capital, and to Matera, the third-oldest city in the world. The nearest airports are Naples-Capodichino, reachable in about two hours also by direct bus connections, and Bari-Palese, at a similar distance but accessible only by car. It is just five hours from Rome, with daily bus services to the city.

Calda: the gateway to the town and its history

Arriving in Latronico, one first encounters Calda, a place suspended between nature and memory. Two enormous hands raised toward the sky welcome visitors: an invitation to look upward, to let the landscape pass through you, to open yourself to hospitality.

Here, sulfurous springs have flowed since ancient times—waters that once restored weary travelers and that still today invite one to slow down, breathe, and let go. Not far away, prehistoric caves tell of the earliest human settlements, while the Municipal Museums preserve the memory of thermal culture, rural life, and a past that continues to live in the present.

Near the Sinni River stands the thermal complex: pools, a gym, spaces for rest and movement. It is a place where nature heals, the body renews itself, and the mind can finally unwind.

The Historic Center: a maze of stone and silence

The upper part of the town preserves the earliest settlement, the Historic Center – Capadavutu for its residents.

A network of narrow alleyways — the Carrare — winds between ancient, sturdy houses, stone upon stone, forming hidden passages, arches, and small courtyards where time seems to pause. The churches, the grey stone doorways, and the votive shrines speak of devotion, memory, and the patient care with which the town has been shaped over the centuries.

Descending toward the lower part, you reach Piazza Umberto I, the heart of daily life, a place where encounters happen naturally, without need for plans. From here, both old and modern neighborhoods unfold, stories continuing to weave together, day after day.

The forests and the hamlets

All around the town center, the many hamlets of Latronico spread out beneath the shade of large beeches and chestnuts. In autumn, the leaves form golden carpets, and the forest smells of mushrooms and damp earth. Here, nature feels close, everyday, almost intimate.

At the edge of the municipal boundaries lies the Malboschetto area, a site of community interest and a special protection zone, nestled among wild forests, sunlit clearings, and slender streams. It is a place where biodiversity remains alive and protected, where traces of prized wildlife can be found and mountain paths tell stories of ancient silences. Malboschetto stands as the clearest testament to the natural richness surrounding Latronico: a landscape not just seen, but breathed.

Latronico is not just a place.

It is a rhythm.

It is a way of being in the world.

It is a gentle border between mountains and sea, between memory and the future, between those who arrive and those who return.

It is in the middle of nowhere and in the middle of everywhere.
